Proprioception is the unconscious awareness of our body's position and movement.
Our proprioceptive sense allows us to move through our environments without bumping into things and use appropriate force and pressure to complete tasks.
Example:
When our proprioceptive sense is functioning we are able to pick up a pencil and write on paper using appropriate force to make marks without ripping the paper.
Pushing, pulling, hopping, rolling, pinching and lifting are great ways to work on developing our proprioceptive sense. Compression and weight also give us some of this input.
Moving our bodies against resistance in a variety of fun and dynamic ways helps us to get this very important sensory input!
There is a lot to learn about our senses and how we receive and organize sensations. Click here to find some great resource materials to dig deeper.
